About HUD Homes Hub
Affordable housing information that actually treats you like an adult.
HUD Homes Hub is an independent, ad-supported directory of every Public Housing Authority in the United States and its territories, paired with a growing library of plain-English guides to the major federal rental assistance programs. We are not affiliated with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, with any state or local housing authority, or with any of the agencies listed in our directory. We are also not a service provider — we cannot place you on a waiting list, expedite an application, or get you a voucher. Anyone who tells you they can do those things in exchange for a fee is running a scam.
Why this site exists
Federal rental assistance is one of the most consequential safety-net programs in the country, but the experience of actually applying for it is brutal. There are more than 3,700 separate Public Housing Authorities, each with its own waiting list rules, hours, payment standards, and quirks. The agencies that need help reaching applicants the most are often the ones with the smallest budgets for outreach. Old phone numbers persist on the internet for years. Glossy "Section 8 helper" sites collect e-mail addresses and resell them to debt-relief advertisers. Real, working contact information is harder to find than it should be.
We built HUD Homes Hub to fix that. We pull our directory data from HUD's official Public Housing Authorities feature service — the same dataset HUD itself publishes on its open-data portal — and we keep our written guides focused on what an applicant actually needs to know rather than on what marketers want to sell them. Every page on this site is meant to help one specific person make one specific decision. If you read a page and feel like it told you nothing useful, please email us and tell us so.
Where our data comes from
The directory portion of HUD Homes Hub is built from HUD's Public Housing Authorities feature service, hosted on HUD's enterprise GIS infrastructure and mirrored on the public hudgis-hud open-data hub. That dataset includes the formal name, mailing address, contact information, program type, and inventory size of every PHA that participates in HUD's Public and Indian Housing programs. We refresh our local copy of the data when HUD publishes updates and we display the participant code for each agency so you can cross-reference our listings against HUD's own systems.
Our written guides are produced in-house. We rely on HUD's own published handbooks, federal regulations in 24 CFR, and current public guidance from major tenant-advocacy organizations. When the rules change, we update the guides. If you find a factual error, please tell us so we can correct it.
What we do not do
We do not place applicants on waiting lists. We do not pre-screen applicants. We do not collect application fees. We do not have inside knowledge about when a particular PHA's waiting list will open. We do not match families to vouchers. None of those things are services any private third party can legitimately provide for a fee.
How we make money
HUD Homes Hub is supported by display advertising. The slots reserved for ads are clearly demarcated in our HTML as clearly labeled HTML comments. We do not allow advertisers to target specific demographic groups in ways that would conflict with the Fair Housing Act, and we do not run ads that pretend to be official HUD communications. If you ever see something that violates either of those rules, please report it.
